Answers to burning questions.

  • One of the benefits of agency work is that tools and workflows vary from project to project. Of course, I have my favorites, but I’m not set in my ways.

For design software, I have experience with all the usual options, Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD. Currently, I do most of my work in Figma unless a client has specific software requirements.

For usability testing, I love to facilitate tests and interviews in person, but if using software I regularly use UserTesting.com, User Zoom, and Optimal Workshop.

  • Working in an agency environment offers both benefits and challenges, with the dynamic nature of projects requiring adaptability. My approach varies from project to project, influenced by factors such as the project's stage, client requirements, timelines, budgets, and ultimate objectives.

Broadly, my design process adheres to the conventional UX flow: discovery, define, create, test, and optimize.

Commencing with an emphasis on industry immersion, client understanding, and stakeholder perspectives, I consider stakeholder interviews and discussions a pivotal and demanding phase, crucial for project success.

After comprehending the industry, existing tools or solutions, user base, and competitive market, I transition to defining the strategy. This involves addressing key questions about the purpose of the new or revised solution, its mechanics, and the user requirements for success.

With a solid strategy in place, transitioning to the creation phase becomes more seamless. Clear objectives, user expectations, and technical solutions facilitate the wireframing process. Collaboration with high-fidelity designers, technical team members, and project managers ensures alignment with the established strategy.

Throughout the design process, it is imperative to conduct regular testing with users and stakeholders. Early and frequent pivots are preferred over delayed iterations. Recognizing that testing often faces budget constraints, I advocate for a robust testing strategy and the integration of feedback cycles with peers and colleagues.

Every step in the process contributes to understanding the solution, the technology stack, and the realm of possibilities. This knowledge is applied iteratively, allowing for rapid refinement and continuous improvement throughout the design journey.

  • I started off studying nonprofit management and global health in school. Right after graduating, I jumped into the nonprofit scene, working with local and global communities. I absolutely loved it, spending time helping communities grow and get the resources they needed. My roles included fundraising, curriculum development, and program design, all geared towards understanding what communities needed and making a positive impact.

After a few years of nonprofit work, I wanted to return go back to school to learn more. I’ve always had an interest in technology so I joined a full-stack web development boot camp called CodeCraft. After learning development I was asked to sit in on a UX design course and felt it was a prefect fit. Serindipidous. I found a field that was a perfect mix of technology and human. I’ve been loving it ever since!

  • I call Colorado home and fill my time outside of work with loads of outdoor adventures. Whether it's hiking, mountain biking, gravel riding, or climbing, I'm usually accompanied by my dog and my husband.

Beyond my outdoor pursuits, I'm also involved in aerial dance, including Lyra, rope, trapeze, and silks. It's super fun and a unique way of adding creativity to my everyday life!

“Without hesitation, Hanna's most notable contribution to our organization is her exemplary work ethic. Despite difficult and tight deadlines, she goes above and beyond to make sure the work is not only done but done well. It is obvious in working with her that she holds herself and her work to a high standard. Particularly for a remote resource where communication is more strained, she is accountable to her team and is always reliable.”

— Jenny M, Project Manager

“Her ability to see the solution clearly and push aside the non-essential details gives her the unique ability to work efficiently. Her years of experience give her a natural leadership quality that puts project team members at ease and comfortable with her output.”
